In April/May 2007, the department formed committees to draft the
standards. They were named the framing and writing committees and
were filled by invitation only. The membership of the committees
included science supervisors, science teachers, college professors,
professional scientists, and other citizens of Florida.
The framers committee provided broad guidelines for the writing
of the standards. Its first meeting took place on May 14-16 in Orlando
and included presentations by education experts. The emphasis of
this committee was on developing the "big picture" of
what the standards should look like.
The writers committee then developed the various drafts of the
standards using the "big picture" principles developed
by the framers committee. Their work began in June 2007 and will
finish in December 2007.
Starting on October 16, public input was being solicited on the
proposed science standards developed by the committees. Public input
was solicited online and town
meetings around Florida. The public input period lasted until
December 14. In January, the framers and writers met to review the
public comments and finalize the science standards that will be
submitted to the Florida Board of Education.
On February 11, there will be a final public hearing in Orlando.
For more information, see the public
meeting notice.
On February 19th, the standards will then be voted on by the Florida
Board of Education. It will likely take three to four years to implement
the approved standards.
Please note that this schedule is tentative and can change at any
time. We will keep you apprised on these changes as we learn about
them. As it gets closer to the beginning of science standards revision
process, there will be more details at this website on how you can
more specifically influence the process and assure that our science
standards are the best that they can be.
